Proximity
Photography offers an immediacy to the action that cannot be seen in any other media outside of Film. Even film struggles at times to capture the moment and preserve the essence of that moment as Photography does. The power of reportage photography was really felt in the Vietnam war where American photographers were able to catalogue the atrocities that the US Army was committing in real time, this brought public opinion against the war and bring about it's end. In conflict the photograph is more powerful than any other medium.
It means the nearness, space, relationship, place, time, order, quality, sense and fact of the closeness of the image. Also where items are placed in relation to each other is another important consideration and proximity relationships will generally dominate over similarity relationships. The strongest control is available when the two are used together. There are four specific types of proximity relationships which are close edge, touch, overlap and combining. It’s important to keep the principle of proximity in mind when composing photos especially when working with the depth of field. This can create interesting effects that are both positive and negative. Proximity in design simply means that objects near each other are seen as a unit and really is that simple and it’s something you see every day.
